Cleaning Up North Weymouth

Last fall, a dedicated member of the NWCA  personally hand delivered a letter to many businesses in North Weymouth.  The letter, simply put, stated that Bridge Street has become overgrown with weeds, vandalism and rot.  We were simply asking business owners to do their best to make their property look aesthetically pleasing.

In order to support our vision of a better looking neighborhood, the association has decided to embark on a monthly clean-up of North Weymouth starting in April.  We are calling this our “2010 Bridge-to-Bridge Clean Up”.  Clean ups will take place the second Saturday of every month at 10 am.  We are hoping to just do trash pick-up, simple landscaping (if needed), and possible light painting.  Depending on how many volunteers come out, these events would only be about 1 -2 hours long.  Garbage bags will be provided.  Here is the tentative schedule:

April 10th – Beals Park (corner of Athens St. & Bridge St.)

May 8th – Great Hill Park (top of Bradley Rd.)

June 12th – Great Esker Park (Bridge St. Entrance, behind Margarita’s)

July 10th – George Lane Beach (End of Neck St.)

August 14th – Wessagusset Beach (Wessagusset Rd.)

September 11th – Smith Beach (Fore River Rd. & Birchbrow Rd.)

October 9th – Webb State Park (End of River St.)

These events are not just limited to association members – all interested people are invited to attend.  Kids are more than welcome to come out to lend a hand.

If you are associated with any local Boy Scout, Girl Scout or other volunteer group, we’d be happy to have your group join us – possibly to help out in earning badges.

In case of rain, we will postpone the events to Sunday at 1 pm.  We will update this webpage and our Facebook Fan Page with this information.

Lastly, if you have any supplies you’d like to donate (i.e. paint brushes, rollers, paint, garbage bags, etc.) please contact Becky at 617-610-2971.

We’re looking forward to getting out in the community this Spring & Summer to do our part to help North Weymouth!  We hope that you can join us!  Even if you can attend just one of our clean-ups, it will make a huge difference.

A Brief Summary of the Fore River Bridge Meeting in Hingham on 2/24

Last night, members of the NWCA attended the meeting being held by MASS DOT and the Accelerated Bridge Program at the Hingham Town Hall.  Also note that there were over 60 Weymouth residents in attendance.

There was a very informative handout there that explains our options and the process in which the new bridge construction will take place.  The current proposal has construction beginning Spring 2011 and ending in 2015.  We’d like to urge you to view and print this document by clicking HERE.  You can see the proposed pictures (Proposed Vertical Lift vs. Proposed Bascule) on that document as well.

Some things to highlight:

–  They really pushed a new vertical lift bridge (similar to what the current temporary bridge is).  The speeds of raising and lower it will be dramatically different.  It currently takes 7 minutes to raise the bridge.  The new bridge will take 2.5 minutes.  It currently takes 6 minutes to lower the bridge.  The new bridge will take 2.5 minutes.

–  The height of the concrete towers of the new bridge will be approximately 85 feet higher than what the current steel ones are (you can see this in the picture on the PDF file mentioned above).

–  Construction will last approximately 4 years from start to finish.

–  This project is estimated to cost $255 million.

–  Follow the progress of the bridge construction development by clicking HERE

–  Approximately 32,000 vehicles cross the bridge each day.

–  PLEASE NOTE THE FOLLOWING WHICH WAS TAKEN FROM THE PDF FILE (MEETING HANDOUT):  Citizen Input: Your input to the project is solicited and appreciated. Wherever possible, MassDOT Highway Division will integrate citizen input into its design and construction of the new Fore River Bridge. There will be opportunities for you to offer your thoughts throughout the process. Should you have further questions, please feel free to contact Stephanie Boundy by phone at 617-973-8049 or by email at stephanie.boundy@state.ma.us

If you have specific requests for the construction (aesthetics, type of bridge, noise during construction, traffic delays, deterioration of 3A due to construction vehicles, side road traffic due to detours, etc.) please contact Stephanie at MassDOT at the above contact.

Also consider stating your concerns to your local politicians:

District Counselor:  Victor Pap

Mayor of Weymouth:  Susan Kay

State Senator:  Robert Hedlund

There will be more meetings in the future as development progresses.  We’ll inform members as soon as we have any information about these meetings.

Town’s Five Year Consolidated Planning Strategy for 2010-2014

On Wednesday, November 4th, 3 members of the NWCA attended a meeting to discuss the Town’s Five Year Consolidated Planning Strategy for 2010-2014.  Specifically, how the town will use funds for future Community Development Block Grant activities.

In summary, the town typically receives money (it’s usually about $800-$900K) per year that goes to help low to moderate income areas of town or activities that low to moderate income families use.  Unfortunately, the only section in North Weymouth that is considered to be low to moderate income is the area between Sea Street and Blackstone St.

We did mention some items and services that could benefit North Weymouth.  Most people in attendance agreed that all sidewalks in town need improvement as well as combatting the drug issue in Weymouth.  We fought for a preservation of Great Hill Park, services for elderly residents who fall ill and have trouble paying bills, services for citizens who are experience health problems due to the chemicals left behind from the Conoco fertilizer plant, an overhaul of the seawalls (specifically all of the staircases that are pulling away from the seawall), and programs to help first-time home buyers who just fall short of being able to purchase homes in Weymouth (typically families who are making about 80% of the median income who just need a little help to get them into a home), graffiti clean-up and some minor structural issues with the ARC building located on River St.

Meat Raffle at Kelly’s on 11/07

There will be a Meat Raffle at Kelly’s Landing on November 7th from 3 pm – 7 pm.  Nancy Marrapese Burrell will be beginning her efforts to raise $10,000 for the Weymouth Food Pantry and CarePacks, Inc.

Nancy will be running a 100-mile ultramarathon on May 15th-16th, 2010.  She hopes to raise $10,000 which will be split between the Weymouth Food Pantry and the local Weymouth charity Carepacks, Inc.
